Elbow pains: diagnostics and treatment

болит локоть

Elbow joint pains are most often experienced by professional athletes - weight lifters, tennis players, volleyball players and other whose job requires prolonged static forearms position or monotonous, repetitive movements - ultrasound physicians, piano players, house painters and seamstresses. Almost all elbow joint disorders are posttraumatic and inflammatory in their genesis. It means that elbow joint conditions and pains come as a result of chronic traumas, excessive payloads applied to a joint or exposure to constant strain and pressure.

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Redness of tissues covering the joint
  • Elbow restricted movements
  • Muscular weakness in a hand
  • Forearm numbness
  • Creeps and needles feeling
  • Small nots or tissue hardening that can be palpated under the skin surrounding the joint

Those are the signs that will be experienced by a person with elbow joint disorders. If you have a swollen elbow and you feel pain trying to flex or extend an elbow then you need to be urgently examined by a traumatologist.

артроз / артрит локтевого сустава

In most cases, elbow pain diagnostics point to:

  • elbow joint arthrosis/arthritis
  • elbow joint bursitis/inflammatory bursitis
  • epicondylitis
  • synovitis
  • ulnar nerve neuritis
  • elbow joint gout

Elbow joint arthrosis/arthritis

This condition develops in a form of a degenerative-dystrophic disorder as a result of aging processes in the body or as a posttraumatic condition: it starts with development of an arthritis in place of a former trauma, which later transforms into an arthrosis.

Treatment of elbow joint arthrosis normally consists of pain relief and prevention of disease progression. Some complex cases might require an elbow joint replacement procedure.

Elbow joint bursitis/inflammatory bursitis

Inflammation of a synovial bursa of an elbow tip. Elbow joint bursitis develops as a result of regular, repetitive pressures and elbow joint traumas. Most prone categories include tennis, golf and hockey players. A healthy synovial bursa, smooth and solid in its structure, will provide smoothness and softness to elbow movements.

Epicondylitis

The condition develops as a result of dystrophy of tissues in places where muscles anchor to epicondyles of an upper arm bone, which leads to a local inflammatory process. There are several types of this condition:

  • Lateral epicondylitis or a “tennis elbow”

The condition most often afflicts persons who, by their line of duty or otherwise, perform repetitive, stereotypical movements by their upper arms of a flexion/extension nature: ultrasound examination doctors, carpenters, house painters, plasterers, etc. Men are considerably more likely to suffer a “tennis elbow” than women. When acquired, the condition becomes chronic and progressive.

  • Medialis epicondylitis

Most likely to occur after a prolonged static position of an upper arm, which is typical for such occupations as seamstresses, piano players, etc. Clinical manifestations are similar to lateral epicondylitis, however, in case of a medialis, pain will be located in the inner side of an elbow joint.

Gout of an elbow joint

A chronic metabolic disorder that develops as a result of increased levels of uric acid in blood and deposition of sodium salts in joints. A gout manifests in sharp pain in an elbow, increased local temperature, hyperemia and swollenness of paraarticular tissues.
