Ankle joint injuries

Ankle joint injuries are the most common injuries.

An ankle joint is made of glenoid surfaces of a tibia, a splinter bone and a huckle bone. It has a complex structure, a block design and one axis allowing flexing and protracting movements in an ankle joint.

Dislocations of a joint, sprains, and tissue contusions - every person has experienced at least something of those problems. Traumas force a foot and an ankle joint into unnatural position, leading to future pathologies:

  • Acute pain in a foot and an ankle joint
  • Swollen paraarticular structures
  • Haematoma
  • A cracking feeling in a joint, pain preventing from standing on a leg

Those are the most common symptoms experienced by people with ankle injuries, who come to the Rudenko Clinic every day with such traumas. Our professionals, trauma orthopaedists with many years of experience in our country and abroad, help patients to get rid of painful conditions.

Ankle joint traumas most commonly treated in our medical centre include:

  • Ankle joint contusion
  • Ankle ligaments sprain
  • Dislocation of an ankle joint
  • Ankle fractures

Ankle joint contusion

This type of trauma results from an indirect impact of a low-intensity physical source on soft tissues of an ankle joint. A haematoma forms as a result of microscopic fractures of muscle fibres and resulting from it bleeding into an inter-tissue space.

Ankle ligaments sprain

A not careful movement can cause a hyperflextion and a twist in an ankle. Such a position is unnatural for the joint and leads to overstraining of a ligament cluster in an ankle cuff. This can easily result in a sprain or a rapture of ligaments.

Dislocation of an ankle joint

A dislocation of an ankle joint is a complex and extremely painful experience. When a foot twists inwards or outwards out of its axis, the foot joint surfaces deform their natural structure, and a dislocation of joint occurs.

Ankle fractures

The most common types of fracture in an ankle are a bimalleolar fracture and a trimalleolar fracture. Ankle bones, or malleolus bones, are the lowest parts of a splint bone and a tibia bone; they can be felt as bone bulges on an inner and an outer side of an ankle joint. There is a medial malleolus on an inner side and a lateral malleolus on an outer side of an ankle. In case of a bimalleolar fracture, only two bones get fractured. This type of injury might be caused even by a simple movement. It is a commonly occurring injury among women because they wear high-heeled shoes.
