Traumatic events catch us by surprise and bring a lot of trouble to life.
At any age, under any circumstances, femur fractures remain relevant and require timely referral to a specialist. Only one bad fall or an unfortunate incident in a traffic accident can turn an active, full-of-life routine into a hospital bed.
Delaying a visit to the doctor can cause unpleasant consequences in the form of:
- partial or total disability
- incorrect consolidation with limb shortening and disability
- chronic inflammatory diseases - osteomyelitis
- chronic disorders of blood supply to the limb
The team of specialists of the Rudenko Medical Center provides assistance to everyone, regardless of the cause or type of hip injury. The Rudenko Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic has long established itself as a professional both in dealing with gunshot fractures of femurs as a result of landmine-explosive injuries, as well as with usual fractures of the femoral neck in patients of the older age category.

If after an injury you have:
- Acute pain in the hip or hip joint
- Impossibility of active limb movements
- A damaged limb is visually shorter than a healthy one
- A feeling of crunch or crepitation in the thigh
- Extensive soft tissue hematoma, tissue damage
- Unnatural deformation of the limb, in particular with rotation of the foot outwards
- A symptom of a stuck heel is the inability to lift the leg on its own
then it is quite likely that there is a fracture of the femur.
It is worth remembering how to provide first aid to a person with a hip fracture:
- Do not try to adjust the fragments, align the limb, etc. yourself!
- Transport the injured person to a medical facility as soon as possible
- If you have the appropriate skills, you can immobilize the limb with a Kramer or Dieterichs transport splint
- Stop the bleeding, if there is any
- Gently apply cold to the injury site
- Clean the wound or extremity of dirt, if necessary
- Give the injured person painkillers and try to calm them down
Hip fractures are common, massive in size and require surgical treatment in most cases.
The Rudenko Medical Center is a health care institution with many years of experience in the treatment and surgical interventions for femur fractures.
Our achievements, taking into account world standards of care, maintaining a personalized approach to each patient allow us to be professionals who are impeccably knowledgeable in their field.
If you suspect a hip fracture, consult a specialized specialist - a traumatologist at the Rudenko Medical Center in Zaporizhzhia and receive quality help in full.
Fractures of the femur, their types and diagnosis
The femur is the most massive in the human body, it carries the axial load of the entire body and provides its proper support and the ability to move.
Fractures of femur bones can occur both at a young age and at an already mature age. In both cases, the mechanism of injury must include a traumatic agent, but the result of its influence will differ for different age categories.
Fractures of femurs in young patients
Mostly, this happens as a result of traffic accidents, falls from a height and other high-energy injuries. At the same time, a pronounced mechanical effect on the bone is necessary to allow its fracture.

Usually, with a similar development of events, femur fractures will have common features. They are usually
- Oblique, helical or transverse
- Multifragmentary
- With angular and longitudinal displacement of fragments
- With the inclusion of foreign bodies of metal density or others at the level of the fracture
- With localization in the diaphysis and/or with the transition to the distal metaepiphysis
For the diagnosis of this type of fractures, conventional radiography is quite sufficient. However, in some cases, computed tomography can be useful for determining additional fractures of the pelvic bones or for detailing the position of the fragments of the femur fracture.
Treatment of such injuries occurs exclusively surgically with the help of periosseous or intraosseous osteometallosynthesis. Additionally, fixation of fragments with wire cerclages is allowed.
Before the surgical intervention, if there is a clinical need, it may be necessary to set up a skeletal extraction, or an external fixation device, if there is a significant displacement of the fragments or the axis of the bone. Constructions provide gradual restoration of the anatomical position of broken bone fragments and prevent their further dislocation. This makes it possible to preserve the length and future functionality of the limb to the maximum extent, although it will take a long period of time.
Also, in our orthopedic center in Zaporizhzhia, it is possible to plasticize defects of soft tissue of the thigh, set up vac-systems in case of injuries, remove metal fragments from places of damage, etc.

The most common types of femur fracture occur in patients of the older age group. The neck of the femur and the intertrochanteric area are weak points in the massive bone due to anatomical features. For the development of these types of trauma, a local mechanical impact with a small force on a bone that has partially lost its strength with age is sufficient - an unfortunate fall from a height of one's own height, a minimal injury in public transport, etc.

There are three types of femoral neck fractures:
- Subcapital
- Transcervical
- Basicervical
During the development of femoral neck fractures, the surrounding soft tissues and blood vessels are also damaged. Fragments of the neck of the femur lose their blood supply, and the vascular collaterals at this level do not have a sufficiently developed network. That is why, fractures of the femoral neck and intertrochanteric region have a negative prognosis for fusion and threaten the development of osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Diagnosis of femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures is also based almost exclusively on standard radiography of the femur.
In general, the tactics of treatment of such fractures involves endoprosthesis of the hip joint; less often, in some clinical situations, it is possible to establish intraosseous osteometallosynthesis.
Diagnosis and treatment of hip fractures does not cause difficulties for a specialist of the Rudenko Medical Center.
